Brain Candy – What are Nootropics, Adderall, Ritalin…

After the release of the movie Limitless, the area of brain enhancement has become a topic of interest. This movie is about an experimental drug called NZT-48 that induced mental superpowers. In our world today, there exists very mild forms of this smart drug.

One class of brain boosters includes amphetamines. Some drugs that fall under this include Adderal, Benzedrine, Desoxyn, Dexedrine, and Vyvanse. Amphetamines are prescription drugs used to treat individuals diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Adderal and these other amphetamines are used to experience a euphoric effect and lasts anywhere from 10 to 13 hours. These drugs release the neurotransmitters–namely dopamine, noradrenalin, and serotonin, to induce mesolimbic reward pathways and mesocortical reward pathways. These pathways are responsible for driving feelings of motivation, behavior, and reward.  Dopamine and serotonin play a crucial role in these pathways. Despite these boosting effects, amphetamines carry heavy disadvantages and possible health risks. Negative side effects include risk of heart attack, risk of psychosis, jitters, and addiction.

Another class of brain boosters are methylphenidates. This includes Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, Attenta, Rubifen, and Methylin. Methylphendates are most commonly prescribed as phychostimulants to treat ADHD, narcolepsy, depression, obesity, and lethargy. These drugs work by inhibiting monoamine transportation and increase norepinephrine and dopamine production in the brain. The effects of methylphenidates are similar to those of amphetamines. They are also structurally similar to cocaine, but the effects are not as intense as cocaine. The negative side effects include addiction, depression, psychosis, irritability, and anxiety.

Next, we have the modafinil class: Provogil, Modalert, Alertec, Modiodal, and Adrafinil. Modafinil is used to treat patients with narcolepsy or other sleep disorders. This drugs enhances the release of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain which induces wakefulness and spatial task proficiency. However, modafinil can cause rashes formation, insomnia, irritability, and agitation.

Lastly, we examine world of nootropics. Nootropics, commonly known as “smart drugs” are thought to improve brain performance. The term nootropic was termed by the Romanian Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea who was renowned for discovering and advancing this field of study. He also synthesized the first nootropic ever in 1964: Piracetam. A major advantage of nootropics is that the side effects are relatively less intense than those of amphetamines, methylphenidates, and modafinils. In fact, some nootropics have no known negative side effects (ex. dimethlethanolamine, vinpocetine, etc.) A list of nootropics and their effects in detail can be found here.

All of the performance-enhancing chemicals described are naturally produced in our brain. Most commercial drugs are illegal without a prescription. The effects of these drugs will vary depending on different individuals. Negative effects may outweigh positive effects. Your brain may perform best without brain boosters.

Now there is a longer lasting version of Modafinil, it is being marketed by Cephalon and is now being sold online. It’s called Armodafinil and there are two major brands – Artvigil and Nuvigil. The cheaper generic brand from India is called Artvigil and you can buy 300 pills for relatively cheap.
